President's Report

We are finally turning the page and what a year to say goodbye to. With the Covid-19 vaccine I am hopeful for a much better 2021.

During the past year most of us struggled with the Covid-19 lockdown and the difficulty of getting to the cottage, especially our American members who could not cross the border.

In late November I was shocked to learn that we had an outbreak of green-blue algae on the lake adjacent to Oak Road. I had known that blue-green algae was a possibility for Kahshe Lake, but somehow thought we might be spared. This was not to be.

We are extremely fortunate to have Ron Pearson as our Lake Steward. I was truly impressed with the speed, dedication and effort that Ron displayed during this time. His work culminated in a 1 hour presentation with a question and answer period on Lauren Koenig’s Kahshe Lake Community Facebook page.  Ron researched many articles and has revised all relevant material on the KLRA web site.  I would also like to thank Greig Holder for the lengthy time he spent adding Ron’s revised information to the KLRA web site.  Ron also answered many emails from concerned cottagers and he continues to do so.  Ron, in conjunction with the Conservation Committee and KLRA, continues to plan future research. To view Ron's Report click here.

The Waste Management team met in December. Please click here to see the article for an update and also for an important water-access cottager survey.

COM-Com (the Communication, Outreach and Membership Committee) along with the newly-formed Water Safety and Nagaya Beach Committees have all been busy over the winter. Please read their updates within this issue.

I have missed seeing all my friends and family during these difficult times. I am intensely aware of my good fortune at being able to enjoy Kahshe Lake with everything it has to offer. In closing I’d like to wish you a happy and healthy year.

Please stay safe, get vaccinated and go forward in 2021 for all the possibilities life holds.

President of the KLRA.

Bin Site Transition - Update

Below is a summary of a meeting Bob Reyburn and Marg Taylor had with representatives of the District of Muskoka to discuss their plans.

Due to Covid-19 the Ontario Government timeframe for bin removal has been extended, although no details were given

During the winter season all bins will remain in their winter location. Going forward the District has finalized a survey questionnaire (SEE BELOW) for Islanders and other water-access cottagers who use the bins.  Plans for the South Kahshe Lake Road bin users have also been developed and are included in the District article.

Approximately 230 water-access households on Kahshe Lake use the bin sites at Denne's Marina (office location) and Rockhaven Resort or used sites formerly at the Denne's Marina (dock location) or Nagaya Road landing (properties shown in yellow on the map below).

Approximately 40 households on South Kahshe Lake use the bin site on South Kahshe Lake Road (shown in green on the map below) and approximately 40 residents on Larroger Road and its offshoots use the bin site on Riley Lake Road (shown in orange on the map below).

The District is currently investigating if curbside collection can be extended along South Kahshe Lake Road for those households highlighted in green. For households on Larroger Road, a new depot is currently being developed at the former Houseys Rapids waste site.

It is important that all bin users complete the questionnaire before February19, 2021.

Water Safety Committee

The Water Safety Committee was created as a result of the growing concern among many lake residents that the waters of Kahshe are becoming increasingly dangerous to swimmers, paddle-boarders, kayakers, sailers and the boaters themselves, as well as damaging the shoreline and shoreline property, and endangering the wildlife along the shores.

The committee has met twice already, on November 10th and December 15th, and will meet again on January 19th.  They have discussed the issues at length, undertaken research to see how other lakes are tackling the same issues and come up with several strategies to solve or mitigate the problems.  More details will be shared with you once the Board approves the measures that they hope to put in place for the upcoming season.

Rock Marker Report

The Rock Marker Committee needs your help installing the twenty - 18" spherical buoys in our lake this summer. The buoys are placed in the lake each spring and then removed in the fall. All buoys are attached to concrete blocks, by chain or rope, that require the strength of one (or two) people to lift them. They are placed throughout the lake in the locations indicated on the map below.

We are looking for teams to take care of installing (and removing) these spherical buoys in 4 (possibly 5) geographic areas of the lake:

1) East End
2) North / Klueys Bay
3) Central / Grant's Bay
4) South End / Cranberry Island

Please email Marnie Cryderman at KLrockmarkers@gmail.com if you can help with this important task or would like further information.

As well as the 18" spherical buoys that indicate rock hazards in our lake, the KLRA has columnar buoys that measure 10" in diameter and stand 39" tall with flashing solar lights affixed to the top. These are considerably more difficult to maneuver, install and remove from the lake each year. For this reason, we will be  seeking tenders for the Spring 2021 installation and Fall 2021 removal of these columnar buoys and paying with KLRA funds for this service. More information will follow about this process, so stay tuned.

Nagaya Beach Committee

The Nagaya Beach Committeeheaded by Stephanie Boyd (stephanie.boyd@adidas-group.com) and Steve Wild (steve_wild@yahoo.com), was formed as a result of the concerns expressed in a Letter to the Editor in the September Krier and by many members attending the virtual KLRA AGM on September 12th, 2020.  Stephanie made a presentation to the Gravenhurst Town Council on November the 17th asking for action on the following points:

  • PARKING - signs to be updated to 2hr maximum, and NO PARKING signs to be installed before and after the beach area, thus leaving limited parking.  This is probably the biggest step in controlling the problems.
  • BY-LAW - more consistent enforcement: ticketing and towing as appropriate, drinking infractions, etc.  Priority - not safe for locals to do.  Multiple visits every Saturday and Sunday needed throughout the summer.
  • SIGNAGE - new and more prominent signage with updated rules, plus "Residents/Locals Only" signs.  All signs to be posted at all points of entry to the beach.  Signage pointing to the bathroom facility also needed.  Andrew Stacey** indicated that a signage budget for the beach has been included in the town's fiscal plan - no details as yet.
  • GARBAGE/RECYCLING - continued support needed for multiple weekly pick-ups of both.
  • WATER TESTING - it is essential the water quality tests be conducted regularly throughout the summer.  Andrew Stacey indicated that a water testing budget for the beach has been included in the town's fiscal plan - no details as yet.
  • LOCAL BUSINESSES -we need councilor support to educate local businesses (e.g., campgrounds, real estate offices, etc.) that Nagaya Beach is NOT a public beach.  The businesses should not, therefore, be advertising it as such nor directing their clients to it.

**Andrew Stacey is the Infrastructure Manager for the Town of Gravenhurst.

Cheesy Cottage Meatball Appetizers

Original recipe by Makinze Gore of Delish

Adapted by Alison Smithers-Ryan @aliscreationss

Meatballs

1 lb - ground beef
1-2 medium cloves - garlic, minced
½ cup - mozzarella cheese, shredded
¼ cup - parmesan cheese, grated

egg, whisked

2 tbsp - fresh parsley, finely chopped,
Salt and fresh ground pepper

Sauce

1 tbsp - unsalted butter

1 medium unit - yellow cooking onion, chopped
2-3 medium cloves - garlic, minced

2 tsp - Italian seasoning
28 oz - crushed tomatoes
Kosher salt and fresh ground pepper to taste

For Serving

Parmesan cheese, grated
Fresh parsley, chopped

Cooking Utensils

Chef’s Knife

Cutting Board

2 Baking Sheets

Large Bowl

Measuring Spoons

Large Non-Stick Pan

Wooden Spoon

Slotted Spoon

Garlic Press

Whisk

Can Opener

Preheat the oven to 400°F, start the recipe when the oven is up to temperature.

Assemble and Bake Meatballs

  • Line two baking sheets with foil.
  • In a large bowl, add ground beef, garlic, mozzarella cheese, parmesan cheese, egg and parsley. Season with salt and pepper.
  • Using your hands, mix everything together until unified.  (Use damp hands to prevent mixture from sticking.)
  • Roll the mixture into 1 tbsp sized meatballs (16-18) and add to the prepared baking sheets.
  • Bake meatballs in the middle of the oven, until cheese bits are golden-brown and meatballs are cooked through, 18-20 min.  (The internal temperature should be 71°C/160°F).

Make Tomato Sauce

  • While the meatballs bake, heat a large non-stick pan over medium-high heat. When the pan is hot, add butter and swirl to help melt.
  • When butter is melted, add onions. Cook, stirring occasionally, until translucent, 3-5 min.
  • Add the garlic and Italian seasoning. Cook, stirring occasionally, until fragrant, 1-2 min.
  • Add crushed tomatoes. Season with salt and pepper. Bring to a simmer, then reduce heat to medium-low. Cook, stirring occasionally, until sauce is thickened and darker in colour, 10-15 min.
Assemble
  • When meatballs are done, add meatballs to the pan with the sauce. Season with salt and pepper. Gently stir together to coat the meatballs.
  • Using a slotted spoon, divide meatballs between plates. Spoon some sauce over top, then sprinkle with Parmesan and parsley.
  • Enjoy!

An Appeal from FOCA

Many of you will already have received a message from FOCA (the Federation of Ontario Cottagers Associations) asking you to support their campaign to prevent the elimination of the Seasonal Rate Class for electricity pricing.  If the Ontario Energy Board which sets the rates for electricity pricing in Ontario goes ahead with this plan, it will mean that the average cost of electricity for cottagers will increase by about $54 a month!  That's about $650 a year!

If you are happy with this situation, do nothing, but if you are appalled at this increase, then please click on the link below to access the FOCA Campaign for Fair Electricity Pricing which involves letting our MPP Norm Miller know how we feel about the situation.  A sample email message is included.  Use it as is, or edit it as you see fit, but let the politicians know that you are not happy.  Fair Pricing link

If you did not yet sign up to join the FOCA Power Line e-list (which will keep you posted on developments), now would be a good time to do so.

Editorial

I think it is fair to assume that nobody had 2020 vision when it came to foreseeing the effect that the global pandemic would have on our world in 2020.  We can only hope and pray that, with the arrival of the various vaccines, there will be a drastic improvement in the situation and that the world will gradually return to normal.

I would like to express, on behalf of the KLRA Board, the sincere hope that all our American members are managing to stay safe, not only from Covid-19, but also from the violence and tension that we have been seeing in the United States over the past few weeks.

I am happy to report that the 2 new committees set up last year to look into problems at Nagaya Beach and on the boating front have both been working hard over the past few months to come up with ways to improve both those situations.  Please read their reports if you haven't already done so, and feel free to offer suggestions and comments.

I hope that summer 2021 will see a return to a more normal way of spending time at the cottage (but I'm not holding my breath!).

Stay safe, everybody!
